Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Coach's Corner.
- Acca
- An accumulator bet that combines two or more selections; every pick must win for the bet to pay out.
- Asian Handicap
- A point spread that gives one team a half‑or quarter‑goal advantage (or disadvantage) to make the match more balanced for betting.
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money you have set aside for placing bets.
- Bet Builder
- An online tool that lets you combine different outcomes from a single match—such as goals, cards, or corners—into one wager.
- Cash Out
- A feature that lets you settle a bet early, locking in a profit or cutting a loss before the event finishes.
- Double Chance
- A bet that covers two of the three possible results of a match (win/draw/win) in a single wager.
- Edge
- An advantage you think you have over the bookmaker’s odds, often based on analysis or information.
- Fold
- A term that indicates the number of selections in an accumulator; for example, a five‑fold has five legs.
- Fractional Odds
- Odds expressed as a fraction (e.g., 5/1) that show how much profit you’ll make relative to your stake.
- Half‑Time/Full‑Time
- A bet that predicts both the result at half‑time and the final result of a match.
- In‑Play
- Betting on a match while it is already underway, with odds that change as the game progresses.
- Lay
- To bet against a particular outcome, often used on betting exchanges to act as the bookmaker.
- Live Betting
- Placing bets on a game as it happens, with odds that update in real time.
- Margin
- The bookmaker’s built‑in advantage, usually expressed as a percentage, which is how they make a profit.
- Market
- A specific betting option such as match result, total goals, or a player’s performance.
- Odds
- The price of a bet that reflects the implied chance of an outcome and determines the potential payout.
- Over/Under
- A bet on whether a particular statistic, such as total goals in a match, will be above or below a set number.
- Parlay
- A single bet that links multiple selections; all of them must win for you to receive a payout.
- Punter
- A person who places bets on sports events.
- Spread Betting
- A type of bet where your profit or loss depends on how accurate your prediction is relative to a set point spread.
- Stake
- The amount of money you risk on a single bet.
- Value Bet
- A bet where the odds offered are higher than the true probability of the outcome, suggesting a positive expected return.
- Void
- A cancelled bet where the stake is refunded, usually because the event did not happen or a rule was broken.
- Wager
- Another word for a bet; the act of risking money on the outcome of an event.
- xG
- A statistic that predicts how many goals a team should score based on the quality of the shots they take.
